Michelin, one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers, was chosen by Forbes magazine as the No. 1 large U.S. employer for 2018.
Michelin officials say the recognition reflects their mission to give back to its employees, customers and communities.
"At Michelin, our dedication to our workforce is best defined by two key words: We care," David Stafford, chief human resources officer for Michelin North America, said. "From candidate to new hire to long-term employee, Michelin provides experiences that empower its people to make a difference and be proud of where they work. Michelin is honored by this recognition."
Among initiatives promulgated by the company are the Youth Apprenticeship Program, which provides high-school and college students hands-on learning experiences; the Technical Scholars program; and other internship and cooperative-education opportunities.
"In an increasingly competitive job market, Michelin understands the value of providing training and career development, a culture that also attracts mid-career transfers to Michelin because they are seeking opportunities to grow and advance," Stafford said. "In fact, up to 50 percent of managers in Michelin's manufacturing locations were promoted from hourly positions."
Forbes’ “America’s Best Large Employers” list is based on an independent survey with over 30,000 U.S. employees working for companies who employ at least 1,000 individuals. Respondents rate their companies’ overall working condition, salary, career growth and company image.
