Although a recent Harris Poll reveals that the traditional workday may be a thing of the past in some quarters, 53 percent of employers still think their workers should be on time.

But when employees are not on time, excuses run the gamut ridiculous to outrageous, the survey found.

Commissioned by CareerBuilder.com, the poll was conducted between Nov. 16 and Dec. 6 and included responses from 2,600 HR officials and 3,400 workers.

Some of the excuses included “I thought Flag Day was a legal holiday” and “The pizza I ordered was late being delivered, and I had to be home to accept/pay for it.”

Overall, tardiness seemed to be on the upswing since 2015, when only a fourth of workers said they were late one time in a month, versus nearly 30 percent in 2016’s survey.
