A recent poll of Minnesota adults sheds light on how different demographic groups regard the issue of health insurance.

According to a poll released Feb. 15 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, only 30 percent of millennials feel comfortable with insurance terminology, versus 75 percent of senior citizens who claim to understand their policies.

Although their older counterparts maybe more benefits-savvy, both groups could benefit from help navigating the uncertain waters of health insurance, especially in light of proposed changes to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

“No one should feel embarrassed to say they’re confused by health insurance,” Blue Cross manager Edward Arias said in a press release. “It can be a lot more complex than other kinds of insurance, like auto or home.”

Besides consulting an agent to clear up confusion, Arias said it’s wise to review what is covered every year and try to forecast any medical events in your future.

“One member who came in had the same plan for 10 years, but didn’t fully understand her coverage,” Arias said. “We talked through her plan and pointed out some valuable benefits she had not been using. Those kind of ‘a-ha’ moments are really rewarding.”
